Our first guest appearance tonight on Scotch & Ponder, Scott's father in law Noel. Lots of children born in this last year. Simon's son and Scott's daughter both February 2020 babies. Trevor's son a few months prior. Kyle's daughter last June. We're celebrating this. The S&P crew believes we've been given life and we have a duty to pass on the gift. We believe Canada is a great country and that we have a duty to make more Canadians. We believe children make us better people, brighten our days, imbue our lives with purpose. More children to come from the S&P crew, this is only the beginning. Wish us luck.
To celebrate this we have another travel exclusive: Talisker Dark Storm.
Sweet and smoky stands out on the nose. Nice and straightforward for Simon.
Scott has an odd nose there, he smells an earthy dirt. Not pleasant for him.
Kyle picks up vanilla.
Sean gets a herbal/medicinal aroma, which may be what throws Scott off.
We cheers.
Smoky right off the bat. Scott is relieved to enjoy the taste. Was worried about the nose.
Nice oily mouthfeel.
Mild-medium heat.
Looking up other reviews we see cherry syrup mentioned (amongst 20 other things) and this really clicks with everyone. There's a clear cherry cough syrup taste here, and it's very pleasant with the smoke.
Ratings:
Simon starts us off with a 76. The smoky cherry cough syrup is really nice. He puts it on par with Talisker 10, except it's a different ball game. Simon can see how Laphroaig 10 turns into the PX, or how Ardbeg 10 turns into Uiegedail, but he really can't see how Talisker 10 turns into Dark Storm. They must be completely different recipes. Either way, great scotch in his books. Scott thinks this is a notch up from the 10 but he's not a big Talisker fan so far, 66. Noel enjoys it, fruity and smoky, but fails to see anything great, goes 62. Kyle really likes it 74. Sean is the biggest fan out of the group, and certainly would consider a bottle. Goes 78. We average out to 73.5 tonight.
Overall, you can't go wrong here, and we think this is a decent value for these types of flavors, but we also think there are better options at duty free for the same price. Laphroaig PX for instance rates higher on everyone's scale.
Cheers!
The S&P Crew
