Tullibardine Sovereign

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Simon and Scott split on a Tullibardine sampler with their standard line up: Sovereign, 225 Sauternes, 500 Sherry, and 228 Burgundy. The numbers reflect the size of the barrels used to finish the scotches. We're looking forward to dig into this mostly unknown distillery for us.

We're starting today with the Sovereign, 43% ABV, first fill ex-bourbon, $65 CAD here in Ontario.

Sniffing her:

Simon: Briny apples.

Scott: I get pickle juice.

Simon: Yea that's good. Diluted pickle juice. It's a light nose.

Scott: Floral for sure. Bouquet of flowers.

Simon: An old bouquet maybe, that's half welted.

We cheers.

Simon: Same thing on the palate. Little salty briny, little pickle juicy, little something sweet. Little marzipan finish.

Scott: Spicy. (it dies off after a few sips)

Simon: Little fizziness. The pickle juicy is the main note. Not really any apples, little pear(ish) finish.

Scott: Yea I think it's more a pear, I can get that for sure. I can't follow you on the marzipan though.

Simon: Mm yea this is alright. It's good. Pickle juicy on the front, then on the back/finish I get pear and marzipan.

Scott: Yea I get the brine, and then a bit of pear sweetness on the back.

Reviews: Simon goes 70 flat on this one. It's on the lighter side but it's got nice little notes to it. He likes that vinegary briny note. Scott puts this at 67. Doesn't do anything special.

Overall: Not off to a great start but we'll see what happens to Tullibardine when it goes into the other casks. For $65 CAD, it's not a bad buy per say but not something we're going to seek out.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
