Wiser's Seasoned Oak

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

And review number 3 for the night. This bottle has been kindly donated to a good cause by Kyle's father. Thank you Brian. This is also our first Rye review on S&P, and it didn't disapoint.

Wiser's Seasoned Oak Rare Cask Series, 19 years. ''Aged in oak barrels whose staves were air-dried and exposed to the natural elements for over 48 months''. 48% ABV. It looks like this is a limited edition bottle that is now pretty hard to find, but was available once upon a time for $100 CAD.

We sniff around.

Simon: Standard rye nose, a nice spice to it, vanilla flavored nail polish.

Scott: Yea nail polish remover. But it's not horrible.

Kyle: The oak is there too.

Trevor: You can't stick your nose right in. It's potent.

Scott: Sweet nose.

Simon: Yea I have a hard getting past the vanilla nail polish. Maybe a cinammon spice.

Trevor: I like your cinammon.

We cheers.

Simon: Tastes like Christmas.

Trevor: There's ginger. There's a woodsy smoky thing. I can't explain it.

Simon: Some kind of sweet glue resin.

Scott: I get pine notes.

Trevor: Pine/maple. Burnt sap. I've never ate burnt sap. But it's there.

Scott: Yea the stuff that's burnt at the bottom of the pan when you cook with maple syrup. I get where you're coming from with the Christmas. It's got a ginger and mint thing to it.

Everyone's favorite Wiser's they've had.

Ratings: Scott starts us off with an 83. It's got some nice stuff he hasn't seen before. The nose is good but the flavors is where it gets its points from. This tastes like you've been in the woods, something primal about it. His favorite thing he's ever had from Wiser's for sure. Trevor's a whisky guy, lots of cool stuff going on, definitely in the 80s. Any whisky that can take you to a place is worth something. He lands on 82. Kyle stamps an 85 on it. Happy he has bottle. Simon says there's not going to be a lot of variability on this because he's in the same ballpark. He likes the wilderness, some fun notes, the 19 years of age shine through, the forest aged barrel staves shine through, it's great. Rounds this up with an 84. We average out to a 83.5.

Overall: We're not sure if you'll ever find this in stores again but if you do, and you like rye, we recommend you give this a shot. It's well balanced with classic rye flavors but enough unique notes on the edges to warrant everyone kicking up their rating a notch from a ''well done'' in the 70s to a ''I'm impressed'' in the 80s.

Cheers!
