#100: Glengoyne 10

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Review number 100! I guess we'll start counting now. We don't necessarily have something fancy for you today, but for this occasion we did purchase something fancy from one of our best reviewed brands that we'll get to review sometime this summer when the crew gets reunited in person.

Glengoyne 10, 43% ABV, Highland, $65 CAD, ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks.

We sniff around:

Kyle brings up the apples and cinnamon. Simon has the apple pure with the butterscotch. Scott gets a musty note there too. Earthy rotten mossy kind of thing in the background. Sean can pull some toffee notes and some hay. Trevor lands on a fruity floral apricot.

We cheers.

Simon says spicy sweet. Little malty butterscotch. The spice isn't quite cayenne but it's a red spice.

Scott gets apples, not so much the spicy though. It's bright. Little honey maybe.

Kyle gets the aroma of the fallen apples when you go apple picking.

Sean gets a nice apricot note and vanilla. Not a whole lot on the finish.

Reviews: Kyle's pick so he starts us off. It's basic but he likes the apples with the warmth. He gives this a 70. Simon thinks this is a good base. If this is where Glengoyne starts off at $60 he's interested in trying their other expressions. It's simple but it's well done. He pins this at 72. Scott liked the nose more than the palate, he agrees it's simple and a nice base but that puts it at 66 for him. Sean is on the same page here, rates this 71. Trevor finds this one rather boring. Drinkable but too basic. His scale depends a lot on dynamism and richness of experience. He puts this one at 58. We average out to 67.4.

Overall: at the pricepoint this is a fine scotch and it offers in most of us' opinion a good base for a plain sherried Highland profile. You can't really go wrong with this, but you also shouldn't expect to be wowed. We're going to look for Glengoyne 15 for sure.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
