#120: Macallan Gold Double Cask

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Second review out of ten tonight as we split 20 some odd whiskies for reviews over the next 4 months.

Macallan Gold Double Cask. 40% ABV. Speyside. $80 CAD. Bourbon & Sherry casks.

We sniff around:

It smells like a Macallan. There's a tootsie roll chocolate note (Scott puts his palate on that first) that we keep getting from Macallans. Nice to see some notes we can consistently pull from the 4 Macallans we've had so far.

There's an old apple aroma, like the apples that fell off the tree a couple days ago.

There's a butterscotch that Simon pulls. Vanilla.

We cheers.

Scott still gets the chocolate, more on the finish.

Simon says it's very similar to the 12 Double Cask. Without doing a side by side it's hard to tell the difference. Butterscotchy. Little musty.

Very smooth.

Kyle finds it chewy. Simon says it feels suprisingly undiluted for 40%.

Reviews: Trevor's bottle. He really likes the tootsie roll notes. Doesn't feel light even at 40%. All good things going on just nothing blowing him away. 78. Kyle says it's nicely balanced. 75 for him. He'd consider purchasing it, but wouldn't run to the store. Scott goes 74. It's smooth it's rich, it's missing a bit of the complexity that he gets from the 12 Double Cask and 12 Triple Cask so just a few points less than those two. Simon matches that 74. He's mildly impressed, not something he would get a bottle of but definitely enjoyable. We average out to 75.3.

Overall: Fair value here on this Macallan (78 on our value score). As per other Macallans this makes a great gift: smooth, good looking bottle, innoffensive without being boring or diluted. Not something any of us are going to rush out to buy but it might end up on our shelves at some point.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
