#141: Ledaig 10

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Our 9th review tonight, and our first from Ledaig or Tobermory distillery. We should try their unpeated as well before we cross it off completely but this visit to the Isle of Mull is definitely one off the bucket list.

Ledaig 10. 46% ABV. Isle of Mull. Peated Scotch. $75 CAD.

We sniff around:

Scott gets a musty rotten fruit, like an apple or a pear. Fermenting orchards.

Simon gets a sweet gasoline aroma.

Premium gasoline Kyle says.

Trevor gets a meaty salty note.

We cheers.

Scott gets salt on the palate.

Kyle definitely gets meaty on this. Like a T-Bone steak.

The fermented apples are still there. Simon still thinks its more like watered down gasoline with honey in it.

Reviews: Simon starts us off. He likes that peat, that salty, that sweet gasoline. He's probably going to stick to his Ardbegs, his Lagavulins, and his Laphroaigs for peated stuff, but he'll enjoy the rest of this bottle for sure. It's an 80 for him. Kyle thinks it's very nice. Rotten apples cider, fermented apples, smooth. He goes 76. Trevor also likes the fermented apples, nothing too crazy but he enjoys it. 77. Sean goes 82. He likes the flavors and the odor, although he thinks it would be offputting for most people. Like Simon he's going to stick with Lagavulin and Ardbeg though for his peat cravings. Scott lands on 80. It's neat, interesting notes. Sweet and mild on the palate, easy drinking, balanced. He would look forward to trying some other Ledaigs, this is a good base. Averages out to 79.

Overall: We all enjoy this, it definitely offers something different that the peated distilleries everyone knows. That said, I don't think it will become any of us' go to. If you've already run through the big peaters from Islay, then you should try Ledaig for a change, but if you're starting out, go to Islay first. This does pretty well on value for us at 83 points, given that it's the least expensive of all the entry level peated scotches.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
