#153: Glenfarclas 105

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Our first of three Glenfarclas this round. We were impressed with the 12 year, and we wanted to see how Glenfarclas builds on it with the 15, the 21, and the scotch we're tasting tonight, the 105.

Glenfarclas 105: 60% ABV, $110 CAD, Speyside, Oloroso casks, no age statement.

We sniff around:

Kyle starts us off with grapes.

Simon was thinking more figs/dates but grapes works too. Very rich.

Scott gets a Werther's Original caramel. The chewy kind. Some pear too.

Sean gets a musty note.

Trevor had a vinegar note at first but that's gone away and he gets the pear, caramel, and the old cottage musty smell now.

Scott gets the grape, but it's that note that was prominent on the Amrut, it's grape candy like Fun Dip.

Kyle says the mustiness he gets is like when you open the dishwasher a week or more after doing a load, and the condensation just has something to it.

We cheers.

That's spicy!

Kyle gets some salt with the spice.

We're gonna need a few sips before we can dig into it. Simon compares it to sweetened cough syrup, like NyQuil or something. He says it's more butterscotchy than grape candy on the palate but very similar to the nose. Figgy raisiny sweetness.

Scott says you gotta take very tiny sips of this.

Very warm Sean says. Gonna save this sample for December.

Lots of sherried flavors. Simon says this tastes like Glenfarclas 12 we reviewed a while back but dialed up to max. Scott says the 12 tasted good though.

Kyle's pulling a little bitter note in the background.

Scott notices that over time the palate turns more medicinal, herbal, and bitter.

Reviews: Sean's pick. He gives it a 73. Same rating as the Glenfarclas 12. He agrees this is just a dialed up version of it. He thinks it's not bad or great, just nice and punchy. Scott goes 59. He doesn't want to drink any more of this. He loved the 12 in comparison to this. It has a nice nose, but you need to tip toe around this to attempt to enjoy it. Simon goes 82. He really likes the punchiness. He thinks it gets outshone by other options like A'bunadh or Arran Bodega, but still, very enjoyable. Trevor's at 81. With little sips, this is very enjoyable and tasty. Kyle pins a 65 on this. He would never buy this, it's a little much on the spice. Heat non-stop. He's literally sweating right now. He gives the nose a good rating, but it's not enough to make up for the murky palate. Averages out to 72.0.

Overall: This goes into our top 3 most controversial scotches, along with Aberfeldy 12 and Glenfiddich 14. The crew doesn't recommend this. We haven't posted our A'bunadh review yet, but we recommend that you pick that up, or even the Arran Bodega over this. They've got a similar feel and flavors but everything holds together a bit better and delivers a more enjoyable experience.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
