#160: Bumbu XO

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

We're taking a break from whisky this week with our second rum review! Lots more to come too.

Bumbu XO: Panama rum, up to 18 years old, 40% ABV, $70 CAD, probably has a modest amount of sugar added, aged in bourbon and sherry casks.

We sniff around:

Kyle starts us off with red liquorish.

Simon says more black liquorish. Sean and Scott are with Kyle on the red camp.

Scott adds butterscotch and bananas. Sugar cane type of sweetness. Reminds him of a rum dipped cigar, sweet tobacco aroma.

Sean gets some nailpolish remover in there, spices in there too. Simon agrees, maybe fennel.

Trevor gets caramel deserts on the nose.

We cheers.

Simon gets a nice buttersctoch note right off the bat. The kind you would get in butterscotch ice cream. Everyone agrees, Scott says it's like Werthers Original. It lingers.

There's herbal notes on the front palate, but that goes away. Anise maybe. Simon says it's a Ricola, herbal honey throat candy note. Simon gets a slightly oaky bitter note that comes in and out.

Reviews: Simon's pick. He says it's easy to drink, makes a good intro to fancier rums. He likes the Diplomatico Reserva a bit more. Bumbu XO will probably not end up on his shelf again. That said, it's good and tasty. 73 for him. Scott has this at an 80. He also likes the Diplomatico Reserva better too, but that said this is very tasty. Kyle is also at 73. Definitely enjoyable, the butterscotch notes were nice. He couldn't get very far past that, a little too sweet for him. Deserty. He personally wouldn't buy a bottle, but still good. Sean is at 76. He enjoys it, would consider picking up a bottle. Trevor says this is very smooth, very sweet. Quite enjoyable. 82 for him.

Overall: This is pretty tasty. This isn't going to dethrone Diplomatico Reserva as our go to sipping rum, but it's certainly enjoyable. Not a bottle most of us will stock though. We've got a dozen or so rums lined up for reviews so we'll have our feet nice and soaked soon enough.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
