The crew is getting together today to split our round 6 bottles and have a little Christmas party at Scott's. Some fun things to look forward to this round. We've got a limited edition Lagavulin that got aclaimed whisky of the year by Whisky Advocate. We've got a couple fancy Glenmorangies. We've got kids running around but we did find the time to review a couple bottles, starting off with this fancy looking rum.
Plantation XO: 40% ABV, $79 CAD, Barbados rum, XO so at least 6 years old, aged in ex-bourbon then transfered to ex-Cognac casks for second maturation.
We sniff around:
Not a ton on the nose, Simon says. Some herbally notes.
Scott pulls some sugar cane, molasses syrup-yness. Smells thick.
Kyle goes for a maple syrup.
Trevor gets a little cinnamon.
We cheers.
It is thick.
Kyle gets caramel. Super smooth.
Simon agrees, some herbs. Fennel or licorice.
Scott gets a bitter note. It's sweet but as much as other rums he's had. There's a nice butterscotch on this.
Reviews: Simon starts us off. He does like it but wouldn't buy another bottle. Just feels a little too simple. 77 for him. Trevor agrees but he goes 80, it's well done. It's really consistent Kyle says. Not sure that he'd buy but he's certainly enjoying it. Would go nice with ice cream. 81. Scott got side tracked and I never got his rating but he seemed to enjoy it without being blow away, so I'm guessing he's in the same range.
Overall: This is good but it fails to stand out. This is certainly very smooth, so you would impress non-enthusiasts with it. We'd recommend you try to sample it before commiting to a bottle.
Cheers!
The S&P Crew.
