Southern Ontario got taken out by a snowstorm for a couple days, and it's still going. Sometimes snow can be pretty but for the most part it makes everything bland. Not really a fan but I guess that's what we sign up for when you take on the Canadian badge.
Glenmorangie 18: 43% abv, $180 CAD, Highland Single Malt, aged in ex-Bourbon and ex-Oloroso casks.
On the nose:
Nice sherried Highland Scotch profile Simon says. Prune-y, date-y. Dried fruits.
The guys are not on the same wavelength right now. Sean, Kyle, and Scott are more on the apple, generic Speyside note. Sour apple.
There's a debate whether it's a rich or light nose.
Grape candy note comes out. Malty.
We cheers.
Kyle says it's pretty uneventful right off the bat.
Scott gets some malty apples and a little grape candy. Very smooth, no harsh notes. Oily consistency which he likes.
Simon agrees, nice feel to it. Kind of minty.
Sean calls it a dessert scotch. Something light to have after a meal.
Sour apple, Scott adds.
Simon gets some candy, apple flavors, little caramel, malty honey.
Little bitter note Kyle says.
Reviews: Sean's pick, he thinks it's good. Light and easy to drink. Well balanced. 82 for him. Kyle puts this in the ''watching hockey'' or ''playing video game'' category. It's nice, it feels nice, but there's not a whole lot going on. Very subtle. 70 in his books. Simon's at 81. Feels nice, tastes nice, comes together well. This is a fancy scotch for people who aren't into scotch. Trevor lands on 82. Scott has a hard time rating it. He really likes it but it's simple. He's going to land on 85. It does what it does very well. Fantastic mouth feel. Would be thrilled to get gifted this, but probably would not seek it out. We average out at 80.
Overall: Well, this is not likely to end up on any of our shelves. That said, we think it does a good job at being easy-drinking, well-balanced, and good feeling, so if you are looking for a nice gift to someone who isn't knee deep into scotch but enjoys the occasional glass, this would be a good option.
Cheers!
The S&P Crew.
