#202: Glenkinchie 12

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

How many more Single Malt distilleries do we still have to get through? I think the crew is at this stage between amature and connoisseur that's making us a little overconfident. Everytime we think we've got this whisky stuff figured out we get hit with a curveball or a distillery we know nothing about, and that reminds us we've got ways to go still.

Glenkinchie 12y: 43% abv, $90 CAD, Lowland Single Malt.

On the nose:

Simon smells all sorts of apples, malty apples, candied apples. It's got an earthy richness to it too, almost like it's lightly peated.

Scott gets some pear. Fermenting fruit note that's a little offputting. Citrusy notes, hint of lemon or clemantine. Something tangy.

Sean gets a little nailpolish remover.

Kyle pulls a green olive note.

We cheers.

Scott starts us off with great mouthfeel. Smooth.

Mostly copy paste from the nose Simon says but there's some extra there. It's more malty, cereal honey notes too. Barley, porridge.

Scott gets a salty note.

We still get that ferment-y note that makes this taste lightly peated, although it isn't, far as we know.

Reviews: Scott's pick. He starts us off with an 87. He loves this scotch. Incredibly smooth, very flavorful, it teases you with this mild peatiness, loads of grainy malty notes. He'd love to pick up a bottle of this. Kyle is on the same page. This gets better every sip. 85. Going to be looking to get one of these on his shelf. Simon likes the malty notes, this is tasty stuff. He wouldn't be looking to stock it but he's looking forward to his friends stocking it. 80 for him. Sean gives this an 84. Trevor likes the olive note, there's a hint of Martini in there. 83 in his books. Averages out to 83.8.

Overall: You should try to get your hands on a drink of this. It does very well on value too and is unlikely to disapoint, so don't be shy to grab a bottle if you see it sitting around. This is a smooth, flavorful, rich, balanced whisky, with a bit of everything in there. It took us a while to get to Glenkinchie but we're glad we made it.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
