It just went from -10C to +10C overnight here in Norfolk County AND it's raining, so the whole city is a big lake, with all the snow melting and the ground still frozen. Hopefully everyone's basement survive.
Arran Amarone: 50% abv, $85 CAD, no age statement, aged in Amarone red wine casks, Single Malt from the Island of Arran.
Sniffing around:
Trevor starts us off with grapes and caramel.
Simon says it smells pretty hot. Nostrils burn. Otherwise apples, berries, honey.
The bottle brags about ''elegant notes of cherry, dark chocolate and turkish delight, with a hint of cranberry''. That's pretty good actually.
Sean gets the chocolate and cherries, cinnamon too a little. Trevor gets that cranberry note.
We cheers.
Kyle gets the grape right away.
Quite a bit of heat. Everyone agrees. The flavors are similar to Arran Bodega but doesn't come together as well Simon says.
Scott gets a bitter dark chocolate.
Simon gets some apple notes, fruity notes, peach schnapps, it's very flavorful, it's just too hot. A little butterscotch/werthers. Dark chocolate too after a few sips.
Sean gets a mango note. We like that.
Kyle gets a Buckley's feel to it. It's got a coating thing going on like cough syrup too.
Reviews: Simon's pick. He's been wanting to dig into the large Arran line up. This one though, I mean it's good but the Bodega does everything this does but better. It got less hot and more manageable after the first few sips but still a little messy. Very flavorful though. 75. Trevor thinks this one is good but not special. Maybe a good warm me up on a cold day. 72 for him. Scott lands on 69. Everything this offers is ruined by the heat. Really nice flavors but it doesn't come together well. He wouldn't go for this one. Kyle agrees. Every sip knocks his score down a point. Nice flavors again but ruined by the heat. 66 for him. Sean pins this at 70. The cinnamon heart note pops out for him, maybe a bit too much. Averages out to 70.4.
Overall: Kind of a let down from Arran. We'd recommend you get the Arran Bodega instead. It's around the same price with similar flavors and better put together.
Cheers!
The S&P Crew.
