The tulips are peeping out! Always an exciting sign of nicer weather out here in Ontario. And to usher Spring in we're trying a new Speyside distillery that's been on our hitlist for a while.
Cragganmore 12, 40% abv, $100 CAD, Speyside Single Malt.
On the nose:
Scott starts us off with sweet citrus, like nectarines. Some tropical notes.
Kyles goes for buttertart. A white wine/Chardonay. Champagne Trevor says, it smells carbonated.
Sean and Scott go for a hint of smoky. Like this is a little peated.
Sean goes for honey, smoky apple/pear.
Smells smooth.
Simon pulls some malty notes. Almost tastes peated how rich it is.
We cheers.
Red liquorish right off the bat Kyle says.
Sean goes for cherry. Tastes like juice.
Thicker mouth feel. Scott gets more citrusy notes. Even a mango. Lemon lime. Peaty tease, just a touch of it.
Tart/bitter/oaky finish.
This is dangerous. This is night cap kind of drink. A lullaby scotch.
Apple flavored oats on the finish Simon says. Plain potato chip. Baking spices. Full. Apple pie.
Trevor goes for floral now.
Kyle gets a bit of that Pledge lemon spray.
Reviews: Scott's pick. He's going 87. He really enjoys this. He's planning on picking up a bottle. It's a little pricey but he definitely wants it on his shelf. Smooth, great bouquet of flavors. Looking forward to trying more Cragganmores. This is definitely on the top of Kyle's Speyside list. It's got a lot going on. We all pulled different flavors. He would also be looking for a bottle. 88 for him. Sean is landing on 84, definitely will consider a bottle. Trevor goes 83. Pretty impressive. It's not his favorite but it's fun. Packs a lot of flavor for 40%. Simon rounds up the review with an 81. Not likely to land on his shelf but still very tasty stuff, may very well order it at a bar. We average out to 84.6.
Overall: By all means, get yourself a bottle of this. It's smooth but full flavored, complex, and tasty. Hard to find something that delivers on both. Definitely a standout for us and something the crew will go back to. Looking forward to more Cragganmores.
Cheers!
The S&P Crew.
