#218: Bunnahabhain Toiteach A Dha

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Man things move fast in Spring. You barely have time to appreciate the Daffodils and then you walk out and a waft of humid florid air tells you the daffodils are out and the apple blossoms are in. Now apple blossoms are out, lilacs are in. Too fast. Also Scott's pick for our next book review is Jonathan Haidt's The Righteous Mind. Looking forward to that one.

Bunnahabhain Toiteach A Dha, Peated Islay Single Malt, no age statement, 46.3% abv, $100 CAD.

We sniff around:

Kyle starts us off with ''very smoky''.

Scott says he might mistake this for a Lagavulin. Simon agrees, some liquid smoke here, similar to Lag 16.

Trevor pulls a BBQ note: charcoal, BBQ sauce. Hickory BBQ sauce. Sweet Baby Rays.

Sean goes for pepper lemon.

We cheers.

The smoky pops Trevor says. Lemon on the finish.

Simon calls it punchy liquid smoke. Lemon pepper is there on the finish yea. Charcoal, BBQ sauce.

It's got a good feel for 46%, Simon says he'd mistake the abv for low 50s blind.

Mostly copy past from the nose.

Reviews: Scott slaps an 89 on this. He thinks this is right up there with the standard Lagavulins. The hickory notes are nice. Very well put together. Trevor's matches that 89. All flavors he likes, meaty BBQ smoke, comes together very well. He definitely prefers his Bunnahabhain peated. Expect this on his shelf. Simon goes 88. Every sip it gets a bit better. He finds Bunna loses some of it's uniqueness when it peats its scotch, but nevertheless very well done. Sean lands on 87. Kyle wraps it up with an 87. Going to land his shelf very likely. Averages out to 88.

Overall: This is going to end up on most of us' shelf. It's just so well done, such a nice feel to it, good price. No controversy at all with the crew. We recommend you get a bottle of this if you like peated scotch. Can't go wrong here. The best offering from Bunnahabhain we've reviewed so far. We have the 18 year coming up in a few months too.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
