#220: Kilchoman Machir Bay

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

June! The Summer Daysare here with their long weekends, cottages, camping, beachsides, and BBQs. Looking forward to it.

Kilchoman Machir Bay, no age statement, 46% abv, Islay single malt, aged in bourbon-refill casks, $90 CAD.

We sniff around:

This smells so good Simon says. Lemon, salt, sea side.

Hint of briny dill, grass, hay, sea spray Scott adds. Freshness to it, brightness. Smooth nose.

Helps with his allergies Kyle says. Youthful. White wine Chardonay aromas.

There's a sweetness that's hard to pinpoint. Honey? Sugary?

We cheers.

Nice salty dried hay Simon says.

Grassy Kyle adds. Gets a limoncello flavor there too.

Salty lemons on the finish Trevor gets.

Scott finds a long warm finish. Honey sweetness. Peat. Nice balance and combination of familiar Islay notes. Except not smoky. Little peppery.

Reviews: Kyle's pick so he starts us off. This is well put together. It's his type of whisky too. The hay and grass notes are nice. Hits the spot for him, will have it on his shelf for sure. 87 for him. Simon is on the same page. This is so well done, it's not trying to get fancy, it's doing exactly what you want it to, would pair nicely with a cigar, nice evening drink, would be happy to have on his shelf for sure. 87 for him as well. Scott is going 90. He already has a bottle in fact, as he had a sample about a year ago. Trevor agrees with everyone. 85 in his books. He likes the Lagavulin 8 a bit better for the same type of scotch but the Machir Bay is different enough that it warrants having both. Sean rounds up the review with a third 87. Averages out to 87.2.

Overall: Lagavulin 8 still reigns supreme on the podium of young bourbon-refill Islays but there's a new silver medalist, and we find it offers enough of a twist to stand on its own and not get overshadowed. Not much controversy tonight as we all think this is delicious and it'll very likely end up on each of our shelves shortly, if it isn't there already.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
