Scotch & Ponder started organizing some online tastings! Very exciting to see how receptive distilleries and reps are to take us through their line up. Half of the whisky experience is the tasting, but the other half (and the reason this is such an expensive hobby) is because of the passion and patience and craft that goes into making it. And the only way to capture that is to get the Master Distiller or the rep on the line and listen. We did our first one with Amrut a month ago and it was amazing to learn the innovation there and the trial and error that goes into the core line we see online. Look forward to those Amrut review dripping over the next month. In the meantime:
Glenmorangie Cadboll Reserve, 15 year old, 43% abv, goes from ex-Bourbon into French Barrique finish, $155 CAD.
Sniffing around:
Kyle gets honey right off the bat. Pretty calm/tame. Orange peel/citrus.
Honey malty fruity candy notes, Simon says.
Scott agrees with the citrus note, bitter orange. Salted butter. Simon would go more for a browned butter.
Smells nice and inviting Simon says.
We cheers.
Scott starts us off with malty bitter notes. Not that many sweeter fruity notes he was expecting from the notes.
Simon agrees, malty citrusy bitterness, spicy. It's a little apple/honey sweet but very backgrounded.
Sean goes for oaky kind of bitter. Very good a little like chewing on tree bark.
Scott still gets the butter, or creaminess.
It's better now Simon says. It was a bit of a mess at first but now it's balancing out. He gets a bit of that butter Scott says.
Cinnamon hearts Trevor says.
Reviews: Sean's pick. He starts us off with 72. It doesn't do much for him. It's well balanced but those bitter notes are a bit off putting. Scott is on the same page, the nose is pleasant, but the palate leans bitter. He likes the buttery thing it has. 73 for him. Kyle hasn't been impressed with anything from Glenmo. He did like the buttery note, would be a notch lower without that. 68. Trevor pins this at 70. This reminds him of Jagermeister somehow. Simon lands on 74. In the end it balanced out well, it's decent, slightly below average, easy drinking, would be happy to have a dram if any of the boys are trying to clear out their samples but will not be looking for a bottle. Averages out to 71.4.
Overall: This does poorly on value. We wouldn't recommend it in general but when you factor in the tomatos it's an easy pass. A generic Glenmorangie release in our opinion that doesn't do a ton to differentiate itself from Lasanta or Quinta Ruban. Once we grab the Signet we'll have reviewed their entire core, so looking forward to that.
Cheers!
The S&P Crew.
