Unpeated Bruichladdich was off to a rough start when we reviewed the Classic Laddie over a year ago. It's been a while and we're revisiting it with a more crafty limited edition expression:
Bruichladdich Bere Barley 2010. 8 years old. 50% abv. $100 CAD. Unpeated Islay single malt. Aged in ex-bourbon American oak.
Sniffing around:
Scott starts us off with dill. Hard to get much deeper than that. Pickle jar. Briny. Eventually gets some vanilla cake near the end of the review.
Simon gets more malty honey. Apple cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar. Cereal.
Trevor gets the dill. Some cherry too.
Kyle gets more cotton candy birthday cake notes. Bale of hay. Green apple.
Quite a span of flavors here on the nose.
We cheers.
Simon says malty cereally with pickle juice. Old barrel notes.
First sip hit Scott hard. Sweeter notes on the palate, honey. Dill.
Kyle gets a lot of oak.
Reviews: Trevor's pick, he really likes this. It's fun, it's good, it comes together interestingly well. He's going 85. Possibly a good intro scotch. Kyle follows up with an 85 as well. Every sip brings a new note. Really enjoys it. Scott pins it at 80. Flavors are nice but not something that will end up on his shelf. Simon thinks this would make a great intro to Scotland with a barley forward, rawer spirit. 87 for him, would love to have it on his shelf. Sean wraps it up with 83. Averages out to 84.
Overall: Some solid reviews from the crew. This is crafty, it's tasty, it's a raw young barley forward coastal scotch. Nice balance of sweet, salty, and malty notes. For the price it will end up on a couple or our shelves for sure. Well done Bruichladdich.
Cheers!
The S&P Crew.
