#232: Loch Lomond 12

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

It's been a nice summer so far. Renos, camping, family gatherings. The crew is keeping busy. We're still managing to get together weekly for the most part for over 2-years now! Been a fun ride boys. Another new distillery today for us with Loch Lomond, a Highland distillery near Glasgow. We're starting with their 12 year old whisky:

Loch Lomond 12, 46% abv, $66 CAD, Highland Single Malt, 12 years old, matured in a combination of bourbon, refill, and recharged casks.

Sniffing around:

Smells a little funky Simon says.

Yea rotten apples Kyle adds. Lemon, lime.

If we're going citrus Simon is thinking potpourri, dried up orange rind.

Scott gets All Sorts and other candies. Red grapes, cherry, raspberry.

Trevor goes for red and black liquorish. Fermented fruits.

We cheers.

Scott gets a carbonated feel. Little sour. Little bitter. Finish is very sweet. Sugary sweetness.

Simon agrees. Funky butterscotch. Funky fruits. Gets those candies too. Swedish fish, all sorts. Hard to really pinpoint the flavors.

Trevor is on board with the all sorts, he likes the bitter to sweet transition.

Reviews: Kyle's pick so he starts us off. He's surprised. He wasn't expecting much at the price point and the fact he's never heard of it. It comes together very well. Nice lasting finish, nice feel. He doesn't usually enjoy all sorts but it works here. He's going 80. He could see it on his shelf at the price point. Trevor actually likes all sorts. Nose, palate, all comes together quite well. Bitter taste, sweet finish. Couple funky things going on. 78 for him. Simon is in the same ballpark. It's hard to put the right number on it, not much to compare it to. He's going to land on 80 for now but definitely wants to get cozier the whisky before commiting to a number. He's not going to run to grab a bottle but if he's just looking for a party bottle this might be it. Scott is going 76. It's nice but it doesn't distinguish itself that much. Doesn't see himself seeking this out. Sean rounds it out with a 72. Averages at 77.2.

Overall: This is not a bad way to spend $65 although none of us are rushing for it. This does better than the majority of 12 year core release scotch so definitely a solid base whisky for Loch Lomond and we're looking forward to trying more from them.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
