#233: Edradour 10

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

We've got our next book selected for our book clud: The Coddling of the American Mind by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt. This is our second Haidt book this year and I gotta say I'm not complaining. The Righteous Mind was the most interesting and well thought out book I've read in a while. Looking forward to this one. In the meantime we review our first scotch from Edradour distillery:

Edradour 10: Highland Single Malt, 40% abv, aged in sherry casks for 10 years, $100 CAD.

Sniffing around:

Scott almost gets a rumminess. Fermented raisin note.

Simon gets a lot of raisins too, sherry porty flavors.

Trevor finds some apple notes.

There's some mollases in there too Simon says.

Sean goes for grape popsicle.

Scott adds dark chocolate. Almost coffee. Malty.

Kyle pulls the orange marmelade note. We like that note.

Overall awesome nose.

We cheers.

Kyle gets the raisin right away. Raisin buttertart. Sweet maple syrup note.

Simon pulls raspberry chocolate toffee.

A lot of flavors Trevor says. Nose is getting floral/perfumy now.

Long warming finish Scott says.

Reviews: Simon's pick. The nose is better than the palate, the nose is full and flavorfull, the palate is lighter, mellow, but still tasty. He definitely likes the cask strength stuff better but this is nice. 78 for him. It's a 64 for Scott. Too watery, hollow. The nose was really good but the palate is flat. Kyle puts it at 70. It's not really exciting. Was hoping for something thicker based on the color and the nose. Not going to look for a bottle of this one but curious to dig into the cask strength stuff. For Trevor it started off high and it's been making it's way down as he drinks it. He's at 73 now, this tappered off quickly. Sean had the same experience. 74 is his final score. Averages out to 70.6.

Overall: Not a great showing for the entry level Edradour, but the crew is in agreement that we want to see what Edradour can taste like at high proof. The nose was just so good, if the palate can follow up it would be a top scorer for sure. At 40% though we agree this is not worth seeking out.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
