#260: Royal Lochnagar 12

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Alright we've got a Scotch from a new distillery today, which is exciting, but also 40%, which is less exciting. That said we've been pleasantly surprised by some 40% in the past so let's dig in!

Royal Lochnagar 12: 40% abv, $100 CAD, aged 12 years, Highland Single Malt.

We're sniffing:

Trevor starts us off with sweet and apple-y. This is a Highland but smelling more Speyside-y.

Simon gets a ether smoke-ish type of smoky earthy note. With a big sniff you get kind of a cotton candy note.

Scott finds more the standard boring apple forward molasses-y sherried notes. Nothing that would distinguish it.

Trevor gets the candy note. Would call it red liquorish.

Kyle gets a sunflower or canola oil.

We cheers.

Copy paste Simon says. There's a sticky syruppy note on the finish that's neat. He gets the canola oil on the palate.

Kinda thin for Scott. He gets a cookie dough, sweet dough note. Syruppy woody malty. Apples. Looks thick in the glass but feels thinner.

Trevor gets a more oily nice mouthfeel so there's disagreement there.

Review: Scott's pick so he starts us off. He goes 70. It's a good drink but pretty mediocre. Standard flavors, thin mouthfeel for him. Trevor pins it at 72. Nothing that stands out. We picked out a few decent notes but it doesn't really come together super well or takes it to another level. Easy drink. Simon goes 75. He's on the same page but he bumps it up a few points, he likes the cookie dough note, he likes the mouthfeel, but overall he had higher expectations. Kyle goes 68 for all the same reasons. Pretty standard. Sean wraps it up with 75. Averages out to 72.

Overall: We don't recommend this. It's not doing anything that the entry Speysides/Highlands aren't already doing for less money. We think the 40% abv really hurts this one. Simon has had the cask strength version from the limited release 2021 and was much more impressed. If you are looking for a basic Highland scotch we would recommend the McClelland Highland Single Malt or Aultmore 12 for something better. Cragganmore 12 for the same price is similar and much better. Just so many better options.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
