Dalwhinnie 15

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

We've been stuck indoors for a few weeks now. In cigar withdrawals. We're good Canadians, and so we're not shy of snow, but these windy weeks got us tossed around scrambling to keep garbage bins from causing an accident.

We're tasting Dalwhinnie 15 today, it's been on our hitlist since day 1. This is a classic scotch recipe that's been around longer than we have, so regardless what you're taste buds crave, if you're serious about scotch you need to know this lady.

We sniff around:

Simon says this is one of the best smelling scotches. Like a malty perfume.

Scott disagrees, it smells too pungent and hot for him. Like a black pepper. His nose might be off, no one agrees with him.

We all agree there's a apple fruitiness going on. Kyle wants to say it's more a dried fruit.

Sean gets more of a honey sweetness. We agree.

We cheers.

A little heat. Scott feels more heat and warmth than he would like.

It's musty peaty on the finish. Very nice.

Simon gets a honey glazed cereal kind of taste. Not Honey Nut Cherrios, more like Honey Bunches of Oats.

A little sour.

Sean calls the sweetness apricot. Simon likes that. More of a background thing.

Ratings: Trevor's pick, he starts us off. Nice nose, floral. Trevor favors dynamic scotches that change from nose to finish, and this has that. The nose the palate and the finish all have their own thing going on, and so you get a more full experience that holds together. At the same time the flavors don't quite hit the spot for him. He goes 80. Simon likes it. Nice range of flavors, delicate scotch, goes 75. Kyle likes it. This is a cold day by the fire place with a warm blanket kind of scotch. He goes 80. Sean goes 78. Likes the hint of peat on the finish to mix things up. Scott didn't like this the best but it's fine and he likes the dynamism like Trevor. Goes 69. We average out to 76.4.

Overall we think you should try this, it's a good scotch, but at C$110 here in Ontario, it's not really something you should expect to see on our shelves. The flavors don't hit anyone's sweet spot. We can appreciate delicate things, but it's not something we'll seek out. We recommend you look for it at a bar or split a bottle with a few friends like we did.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
