Kavalan Concertmaster Sherry Cask Finish

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Good morning everyone! Simon here from S&P. Took part of a virtual Kavalan tour and tasting organized by Craft Cellars and Truth Malters. Thought I'd share my tasting notes and recommendations with everyone. There's a couple bottles in this tasting that I definitely hope to get a hold of one day and share/review with the crew. We tried 6 whiskies: this one, the Oloroso Sherry Oak, the Solist Port, the Solist Vinho Barrique, the Solist Peated, and the King Car 40th Anniversary.

First up is Kavalan Concertmaster Sherry Cask Finish, 40% ABV, $125 CAD.

Sniffing her:

Apple syrup, there's a red wine-y aroma, a little butterscotch.

Palate:

Bitter/sweet. Syruppy. Spicy. Butterscotch. Licorice/herbally finish.

Full flavored, even at 40%.

Overall/Review: This is nice. Not much depth but I think it does a good job at highlighting the core Kavalan flavors and the rest of the tasting builds on this. From the first to the last sample, whether it be peated, bourbon barrels, sherried, expensive or affordable, every one of these 6 whiskies have been syruppy. Different kinds of fruit syrups. I bet any of these would do a great job as a fly catcher. Not that I'm ever going to try. But I bet it would work great. It's worth highlighting that even at 40%, anything Kavalan is going to be full flavored and syruppy. Stamping a 74 on this.

Cheers!

Simon from S&P
