And the last of the Solists for this tasting put on by Craft Cellars and Truth Malters. If I understand they don't grow barley in Taiwan, and they don't have peat bogs. So all the malt is imported from Scotland. Solist means single cask.
Kavalan Solist Peated. 54% ABV. $270 CAD.
Sniffing her:
All kinds of roasted nuts in there. Something fruity. Something funky. Something syruppy.
Diving in:
Butterscotchy. There's a wisp of smoky peat. Good spice. Malty. Little syrup. Maybe hint of tobacco on the finish.
Overall/Review: This is a really nice drink. I liked the Vinho and the Port significantly more but this is fun. The mild smokiness, the background syruppy/butterscotchy sweetness, a little bit of complexity around that as well that's hard to pinpoint. This is absolutely nothing like any Islay, in case you saw peated and thought that. The only thing I can compare with is a Glen Scotia 15 year old port single cask that was slightly peated. The Solist Peated is on sale for 20% off right now but I'm still not that interested in getting a bottle at that price. Landing on 83 here. Definitely interested in trying more of the Solist line. Sadly they're all pretty expensive.
Cheers!
